PROSPECTS OF INDONESIAN ORGANIC RICE

...

Organic rice is rice produced through an organic cultivation process that does not use chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The organic label on the produce has been certified by an independent body. This agricultural product has advantages in the field of health and its own consumer segment. Opportunities for organic rice exports are still wide open, so the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) and the Ministry of Trade are trying to increase exports of commodities with a higher selling value.

“The profit from organic rice exports is huge. The price is much more expensive than premium rice. Organic rice that is exported consists of white rice, black rice, brown rice and brown rice. "This rice is in demand by certain groups of people for several reasons, including not using chemicals, non-GMO, distinctive taste, and can be used as raw material for certain types of food," said the Director General of Food Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture, Kelvin, as quoted from the website. Rice processed with organic cultivation techniques contains high nutrients and minerals. This rice is also rich in glucose. The carbohydrate and protein content contained in it is easily broken down so it is very safe for consumption by diabetics.

Head of the Working Team for the Export of Food Crops, Horticulture, Fisheries and Livestock of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Eka Purnama, revealed that the largest organic rice export in 2021 was to France with a total of 5.15 tonnes of rice exported. Next, followed by exports to the United States with a total export of 50 tons and Malaysia with 45.3 tons. Apart from these three countries, chemical-free rice products are also exported to Italy, Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, Belgium and Australia.

Currently organic rice centers are still in the form of small spots, not yet in the form of large expanses. Organic rice centers can be found in West Sumatra, West Java, East Java and Southeast Sulawesi with a land area of around 215 hectares. Among these centers, West Java is the largest organic rice producing province in Indonesia. The organic rice growing areas in West Java are spread across Tasikmalaya, Karawang, Cianjur and Indramayu Regencies.

The productivity of organic rice in rainfed paddy fields is 5 tons of harvested dry grain (GKP) per hectare. As for land that has been used to grow organic rice for 5 years, it can produce 7 tons of GKP. The rice varieties used are Ciherang, Inpari, Sintanur, and several other local varieties.
